How raised tile floor systems work
Using a pedestal system involves laying structural strength pavers over a pedestal support system, which raises the tiles or pavers off the existing surface. This creates a void between the paving and the membrane, encouraging constant air circulation and providing benefits such as water drainage.
Excellent for use over waterproof membranes, using a raised tile flooring system creates a level surface that spans gaps, substrate irregularities and services.
The pedestals space the tiles evenly eliminating the need for grout. This makes it possible for the tiles to easily be lifted to access the substrate and inspect any waterproof membrane.
Pedestals are also used to level substructure systems that provide a more stable base for your tile deck. These substructure systems are typically aluminium and work in the same way as a traditional deck. They have a rubber layer between the tile and joist and the tiles are clipped into place.
SafePave works just as well with these systems.

There are two ways of constructing a tile deck. On low level decks, a pedestal system is used. An adjustable pedestal is placed at each corner of the tile allowing the level of tile to be adjusted individually. This system is often used on waterproof membranes and can be used on any firm substrate.
The second method is by using a substructure in the same way you would for a traditional deck. This method is used when covering voids, on natural ground, uneven substrates and when the deck is to cover services such as A/C ducting. More expensive than a pedestal system but has the advantage of providing a perfectly level surface with no individual tile movement.
There are many advantages to a tile deck including:
A tile deck is usually more cost effective than a timber/composite deck.
Has better slip resistance than timber or composite
Less risk of surface scratching or other damage
Each tile can be lifted for sub floor inspections and access
Each tile can move independently of the rest, therefore there is no cracking
No Grout
No efflorescence
No rot or insect attack
Can be used at extremely low levels
Perfect for rooftops, fire prone areas and wet areas
Can be used under BBQ's and fire pits
Why use tiles for your deck
Instead of using timber or composite for your deck, you can now use tiles. A structural tile deck has many advantages over timber or composite including the ability to be extremely close to the ground.

Advantages of tiling on pedestals or raised substructure

Thermal Insulation

Movement absorption - No cracks
Lower weight compared to traditional tiling
Easily accessible services

Allows for substrate level changes yet provides a level surface
Acoustic Insulation
Tiles and pedestals are Reusable and recyclable
No grout between tiles - Creates excellent drainage.
