SafePave® Systems Guide

Reinforcement Systems for Raised Pedestal Flooring

Manufacturer:

Introduction

Raised pedestal flooring systems are widely used in modern construction for rooftop terraces, balconies, podium decks and landscaped roof areas. These systems provide drainage, service access and simplified installation compared with traditional bonded paving systems.

However, brittle paving materials such as porcelain and natural stone tiles can experience structural stresses not present in bonded installations, particularly when supported only at the corners by pedestal heads.

SafePave® systems have been developed to improve the structural performance and safety of brittle paving materials used in pedestal floor applications.

SafePave® products reinforce the underside of tiles, forming a composite structural assembly that increases stiffness, improves impact resistance and reduces the risk of tile breakthrough.

System Overview

SafePave® provides a range of reinforcement solutions suited to different project requirements.

Product Function

SPRT – SafePave® Reinforcement Tape Direct reinforcement of tile underside

SSS – SafePave® Structural Support Structural backing panel bonded to tile

SSB – SafePave® Structural Support - Elite Structural insulated support panel

Each product addresses different performance requirements including structural reinforcement, load distribution, vibration reduction and thermal insulation.

System Components
  • SafePave® Reinforcement (SPRT)

  • SafePave® Structural Support (SSS)

  • SafePave® Support Board (SSS-E)

Typical Raised Floor Construction

Typical raised pedestal flooring system:

  1. Structural slab

  2. Waterproof membrane

  3. Protection layer

  4. Adjustable pedestals

  5. Tile or stone paving surface

In pedestal systems the tile is typically supported at four corner points, creating bending stresses across the tile.

SafePave® systems reinforce the tile underside to improve performance under these conditions.

Why Reinforcement is Required

Ceramic and natural stone tiles are brittle materials with high compressive strength but relatively low tensile strength.

When a tile is supported only at its corners:

  • bending stresses develop across the tile

  • tensile stress occurs at the tile underside

  • cracking can occur if stresses exceed the tile strength

Additional factors affecting pedestal tiles include:

  • Concentrated point loads

  • Dynamic loading

  • Dropped object impacts

  • Vibration and wind uplift forces

Reinforcement systems help reduce these risks.

Description

SPRT is a Flexible reinforcing material consisting of:

  • reinforced bonding tape

When bonded to the underside of a tile, SPRT increases bending stiffness and helps contain cracks if breakage occurs.

Typical Applications
  • porcelain pedestal tiles

  • stone tiles used on pedestals

  • retrofit reinforcement of existing tiles

SafePave® Reinforcement Tape (SPRT)
Key Benefits
  • improves bending resistance

  • reduces risk of breakthrough

  • contains cracked tiles

  • simple peel-and-bond installation

Description

SSS combines SPRT reinforcement technology with a 2mm GFRP structural backing panel. It adds a 1.5mm microcellular IXPE layer for impact absorption and load distribution

This creates a rigid structural backing that distributes loads across pedestal supports.

Typical Applications
  • natural stone pedestal tiles

  • large format porcelain tiles

  • areas requiring increased structural capacity

Key Benefits
  • significantly increases tile stiffness

  • distributes loads across pedestal supports

  • improves impact resistance

  • reduces risk of tile cracking

SafePave® Structural Support (SSS)
SafePave® Structural Support - Elite (SSS-E)
Description

SSS-E is a composite structural support panel consisting of:

  • structural skins

  • lightweight structural core

  • SafePave® reinforcement bonding system

  • Optional wind uplift clips

This panel provides additional structural support, vibration damping and thermal insulation beneath tiles. It also houses the wind uplift clips to combine the weight of all the tiles.

Typical Applications
  • rooftop terraces

  • high traffic pedestrian areas

  • installations requiring increased structural support

  • Installations requiring wind uplift protection

Key Benefits
  • Ability to use thinner tiles

  • Increased load capacity

  • improved load distribution

  • vibration reduction

  • improved impact resistance

  • thermal and acoustic insulation layer

Installation Overview

SafePave® products are installed using a peel-and-bond method.

Typical installation steps:

  1. Clean tile underside.

  2. Remove release liner from SafePave® product.

  3. Align reinforcement panel with tile edges.

  4. Apply uniform pressure across full surface.

  5. Install reinforced tile onto pedestal system.

No specialist equipment is required.

SafePave® systems are suitable for reinforcement of most paving types:

  • porcelain tiles

  • granite

  • limestone

  • sandstone

  • travertine

Compatibility with specific materials should be verified before installation.

Compatibility

Tile performance in pedestal systems depends on several factors:

  • tile material

  • tile thickness

  • tile dimensions

  • pedestal spacing

  • load conditions

SafePave® reinforcement improves tile performance by:

  • increasing bending stiffness

  • distributing loads

  • reducing tensile stress at tile underside

Actual performance will vary depending on installation conditions.

Structural Performance Considerations

Wind uplift resistance of pedestal paving systems depends on:

  • tile weight

  • pedestal configuration

  • restraint systems

  • building exposure classification

SafePave® reinforcement systems will improve tile stability and strength. SafePave® SSS-E improves wind uplift resistance by incorporating a joining clip that locks all the tiles together combining the weight of the entire area. Perimeter gluing will further increase tile stability.

Until formal testing is complete, we cannot claim that SSS-E is a wind rated system. It can be included as part of an engineered installation.

Wind Uplift Considerations

Products should be stored:

• flat
• in dry indoor conditions
• protected from contamination
• between 5°C and 35°C

Avoid prolonged exposure to UV prior to installation.

Storage and Handling

SafePave® products are covered by the SafePave® Limited Product Warranty.

Warranty period: SSS, SSS-Stone and SSS-E, 25 years. SPRT= 10 years

Refer to SafePave® warranty documentation for full terms and conditions.

Warranty

SafePave® products contain cured composite materials and pressure sensitive adhesives.

Normal construction safety procedures should be followed during installation.

Cutting composite panels may generate dust. Appropriate PPE should be used.
