What is SafePave ?

SafePave is a system that strengthens tiles that are used in pedestal and floating deck installations to make them safer and eliminate the risk of damage to sub floor systems. The extra strength also has the added benefit of broadening the range of tiles that can be used in these applications. Tests have shown a tile treated with SafePave to be 90% stronger than a non treated tile.

SafePave prevents damage to waterproof membranes, HVAC ducting, Power cables, plumbing or anything else under the tile.

A tile or paver can still crack, but SafePave will prevent the tile shattering and causing damage to people or property

⚠️ Injury Risk
  • Major hazard: A person stepping on a broken tile may fall through or lose balance.

  • Common injuries:

    • Cuts and abrasions

    • Sprains or fractures

    • Serious falls if the floor is elevated (e.g. rooftop or deck >1m high)

Example: If a tile breaks underfoot on a 1.2m raised deck, someone could fall and suffer back or head trauma or broken bones.

🧰 2. Damage to Subfloor Systems
  • Raised pedestal systems are often used to allow access to:

    • Waterproof membranes

    • Drainage systems

    • Electrical, HVAC, and plumbing services

    A tile breaking can:

    • Tear or puncture the membrane, leading to water leaks and long-term structural damage

    • Cut electrical or plumbing lines, causing outages or flooding

    • Damage insulation or fireproofing layers

💸 3. Costly Repairs and Downtime
  • Repairing broken pedestal tiles is more complex than standard tiling:

    • Must lift and remove undamaged tiles nearby

    • Risk of breaking adjacent tiles during the process

    • Reinstallation may require specialized support or adhesive

  • If in commercial areas:

    • Downtime for tenants or business owners

    • Loss of foot traffic, revenue, or legal liability

🏗️ 4. System Instability and Chain Failure
  • If one tile fails, it can shift or dislodge adjacent tiles.

  • In pedestal systems, there’s no bonding to the subfloor—tiles rely on weight and placement.

  • Cracking one tile in a corner-supported grid can destabilize an entire section.

🌬️ 5. Wind Uplift Vulnerability
  • Some pedestal tile systems are vulnerable to wind forces.

  • A cracked tile can be more easily lifted by strong wind, creating:

    • Flying debris hazards

    • Wider deck destabilization

    • Water ingress during storms

🧯 6. Fire Safety and Accessibility Risks
  • In public or commercial buildings, broken tiles:

    • Violate fire safety egress path standards

    • Block access to fire suppression or electrical systems

    • Create trip hazards in designated accessible paths

📉 7. Legal and Reputational Liability
  • Property owners, builders, or specifiers may be held liable for:

    • Negligence in using under-spec tiles

    • Failure to maintain a safe environment

    • Damages caused to tenants or public users

SafePave can be added to ANY tile or paver, even natural stone, increasing the options available to you for your project. It increases the strength at the same time as reducing the sound transference through to the substrate.

SafePave reduces these risks by laminating a high strength, anti-vibration, reinforced protective layer to the underside of the paver or tile. This layer is strong enough to support a weight of up to 2.8Kn* even after the tile is broken.

Like toughened glass, tiles used in a raised floor or decking application can shatter or crack with even a small impact in the right place. This leads to the risk of injury from the sharp edges of the tile, or even major injuries from someone falling through.

Manufacturers of 20mm Porcelain recommend additional protection if the paving is to be installed over voids in excess or 100mm. A collapse of a single tile or a section of tile is dangerous under any circumstances. Even if the floor is only raised 100mm above the subfloor, that’s more than enough height to lead to sprained or broken feet, ankles, and knees. When the floor is suspended several feet above the subfloor, a collapse can lead to more severe injuries.

Ultimately, SafePave provides a balance of performance, safety and cost-effectiveness that benefits every project stakeholder and future user of the tiled area.

Why use SafePave?

Car on broken tile

  1. Reduces the incidence of tiles breaking due to impact,

  2. Increases the crack resistance of the tiles - tests show tiles are up to 90% stronger

  3. Prevents “tile breakthrough” – (where an object or person falls through a tile as it breaks.)

  4. Prevents damage to waterproof membranes

  5. Reduces pedestal cost - Supply and installation of centre pedestal N/A

  6. Prevents broken pieces of tile collapsing fully into the void by holding them together

  7. Reduces risk of injury from falling through or cuts from breaking tiles.

  8. Can be used on ANY size tile

  9. Prevents damage to under tile services such as HVAC, plumbing and electrical.

  10. Can be used on natural stone tiles or pavers

  11. Can be cost-effectively retrofitted to existing installations without changing levels

We can apply the SafePave protection either at your site or ours. The process is quick and quiet.

How do I get SafePave?

Existing tiled decks or raised tile installations.
  • Professional pedestal tile installers will come and lift the tiles, treat them and reinstall. This process can be done without major disruption, as each tile is lifted individually and immediately reinstalled after treating. (a very quick process) The tile treatment is undertaken in the area that is being treated. No need to close a business.

New Tiles, Option One – On site
  • We will attend your worksite and treat the tiles prior to installation. (pallet to pallet). You won't believe how affordable it is. In some applications, it is even cheaper than adding a centre pedestal.

New Tiles, Option Two – Factory treated
  • Either have your tiles delivered to our facilities and we will apply the SafePave Structural Reinforcement to the tiles and have them delivered to site, or, tell us the supplier, tile type and your purchase price and we will see if we can arrange it all for you. (You never know, we might be able to give you a better price for the tiles too.....)
